Kazdin Method® Parent Management Training (PMT)
Kazdin Parent Management Training (PMT) is the gold standard, evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to assist parents in effectively managing and addressing challenging behaviors exhibited by their children. Developed by Dr. Alan Kazdin, a prominent psychologist and researcher in the field of child psychology, this evidence-based intervention has been proven to improve parent-child relationships, promote positive behavior changes, and create a harmonious family environment.
At its core, Kazdin PMT is rooted in behavioral principles and techniques. It provides parents with practical strategies to address a wide range of behavioral issues, such as defiance, aggression, non-compliance, and other disruptive behaviors commonly observed in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anxiety Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), or Conduct Disorder. The approach emphasizes the use of positive reinforcement, consistent discipline, and clear communication to shape desired behaviors while minimizing undesirable ones.
While some of the skills outlined in Kazdin Parent Management Training (PMT) may be familiar, it's important to emphasize that this approach entails a highly specific, research-driven methodology for their implementation. It's crucial to recognize that singular skills alone may not yield substantial behavioral changes; rather, it's the collective and consistent utilization of numerous skills in conjunction that ultimately leads to significant shifts in behavior.
Moreover, the pivotal role of the PMT consultant extends beyond the session itself. They remain at your disposal between sessions through email, providing a valuable resource for addressing inquiries related to skill implementation. This ongoing support ensures the fidelity of the approach and reinforces the accurate execution of the skills taught.
In essence, the effectiveness of Kazdin PMT lies not just in the skills themselves, but in their strategic and coordinated application, supported by the expert guidance of the PMT consultant. This holistic approach amplifies the potential for achieving notable and lasting behavior changes.
We currently deliver Kazdin PMT individually via telehealth and/or phone. It's important to note that while the principles of Kazdin PMT can be broadly applicable, the approach is tailored to meet the specific needs of each family and child.
The overarching goal of Kazdin PMT is to empower parents with effective tools and strategies that lead to positive behavior changes in their children. By learning how to deal effectively with the most challenging behavioral issues parents/caregivers can contribute to the development of their children's social, emotional, and behavioral skills while fostering stronger family connections.
Problem Solving Skills Training (PSST)
Children ages 6-14 work with a Certified Trainer virtually
We also use another evidence-based treatment program called Problem Solving Skills Training. PSST teaches children the life skill of stopping and thinking about different positive solutions to problems and quickly being able to generate possible outcomes to these solutions. Although this program was studied on children with behavioral problems and anxiety with great results we believe it is of utmost importance for all children to learn these lifelong skills.
Children who learn these skills have less anxiety, aggression and defiant behavior and when PSST is used in conjunction with PMT, children show even greater changes in behavioral problems and anxious thoughts and feelings. Teaching children the skills of problem solving and how to challenge negative thoughts improves overall functioning at home, school and with peers.
This is a 12-15 week program and virtual sessions run for about 30-45 minutes.
The Coping Cat and Go-Zen Anxiety Treatment Programs
Children ages 6-17 work with a Certified Trainer virtually
The Coping Cat and Go-Zen Programs are cognitive-behavioral programs that help children recognize and analyze anxious thoughts/feelings and develop strategies to cope with anxiety-provoking situations. The program focuses on behavioral training strategies such as cognitive restructuring, modeling, guided imagery, simulation, real-life exposure, role-playing, relaxation training, and contingent reinforcement. Children are taught how to verbally reinforce their own successful coping skills and are encouraged to practice using these coping skills when anxiety-provoking situations arise.
The Coping Cat program is for children ages 8-13 years old.
The Go-Zen Program is for children ages 4-16 years old.
